Description
This project combines traditional Scottish tartan with elements of African culture, reinterpreting the tartan pattern through a contemporary visual language. Inspired by the historical significance of tartan and the rich textures, forms, and geometric traditions of African culture, the project creates a fresh perspective that merges these two cultural identities. By integrating tartan with African geometric patterns and handcrafted elements, it develops a design that emphasizes contrast, movement, and cultural dialogue.
The fabric design focuses on layering and structural transformation, combining the order of tartan with the fluidity of African aesthetics. This approach softens the rigidity of tartan while introducing rhythm, energy, and a sense of expressive freedom, allowing the design to move beyond tradition into a more dynamic and contemporary form.
